Mind the Gap

The Internet is about being connected to things which change. All other elements of the school are fixed - buildings, whiteboards, computers, CDs etc. What's to stop the Internet from becoming another fixed element? The Thing that will stop this is that the Internet is not a device, it is the enabling platform.

Using Computers in Learning Centres P-4

A team of teachers from Grades Prep to 4 will present how computers are used in Learning Centres in the two hours Literacy block. Teachers will outline how they plan the Learning Centres and classroom management strategies to supervise groups at the Computer Centres. The teachers will give examples of the variety of activities used in the Computer Centres, which challenge each group of children.

Creative Multimedia Performance

The integration of the Arts and Multimedia immerses children in technology in a way that helps them make meaningful connections in their learning, drawing together discreet learning experiences into a 'big picture' production. Creative Multimedia Performance enhances language, SOSE and the Arts Program while developing skills in image manipulation, simple animation and cooperative computer presentations. It involves students in all or some of the following: * scripting poetry, plays and stories * building models, to create visual representation * creating a multimedia slide show using the digital camera to input pictures of dioramas, puppets, models and scenes from the play and culminates in a parallel performance of multimedia and dramatic production for large or small audience.

Web Authoring in the Middle Years

Web authoring through its creative, graphic and visual nature, individuality and open ended learning appeals to all students. It is also an appropriate task for gifted and talented students due to the exploration of ideas and skills, the investigation of odeas and concepts and the creation of a personal multimedia portfolio. Using Dreamweaver 4, I have encouraged students in Years 5-6 to research and audit websites to produce a checklist of features which make websites valuable, approporaite and interesting. using these criteria, they then design, create and publish their own websites. Incorporating a vast array of graphics, still and moving images, a creative use of text, colour, tables and movies these students demonstrate that web authoring is a valuable tool for engaging students in their own learning task and publishing medium.

Quick and Easy Computer Tips for Teachers (Word / Excel)

Would you like to be able to make 100s charts (using multiple starting points and counting by different numbers), tens frames (using your students pictures) and calendars on your computer in less than 5 minutes? If so this is the session for you. See how you can use Word and Excel to make aids for your mathematics classroom and apply these skills to other areas of your teaching. Also included are the uses of the drawing tools for pattern, tesselation, spatial properties and visualisation.

Backwards by Design - a Transfer of Learning

What do the design of a software program, a Year 9 Student Exhibition program, and a system wide assessment program all have in common? Quite by accident I stumbled across a book which describes a process for designing effective curriculum, and realised that the process that was being described, was the process through which we had worked when developing each of the programs listed. I would like to share this concept, and describe how it is not only a transfer of learning, but a model that has so many different applications.

Experiences of Professional Development Online

The presentation will report parts of the development, support, implementation and evaluation phases of a professional development program for teachers of science. The 'Extended Science Professional Development Online" project has its origins in a highly successful program that the author initally refused to redevelop as an online program. While there was considerable experience in web database, discursive online methods, and synchronous video available, the fundamental design of the course required such a degree of participant involvement as discussion, observation and experiementation, that no 'off the shelf' product could be realistically employed to satisfy these needs. A product was thus commissioned and developed to meet the specific needs. Finally a complete redevelopment of the course into a highly temporal and facilitator driven online program was undertaken. This program features a range of technologies which have been integrated into a system that ultimately is directed by the facilitators in terms of content, timing and depth.

Making an Intranet Work for your School

A school intranet can tranform the entire way a school routinely operates. It can have an impact on communication, dissemination of information, collaboration between all groups in the school community and how curriuclum is delivered, both in the classroom and online. Such a significant change to the operational culture of a school reqiures planning and effective management to ensure that the whole school community can use it with confidence and ease. With planning in place, an intranet can be effectively implemented in a school over the course of a school term and fully integrated into the routine operation of the school within a short time beyond that. This session will discuss the procedures and issues required to facilitate an intranet in your school.

Flash Maths - a Gateway to Interactive / Engaging Learning

This presentation is a demonstration of exciting learning materials that clearly show animated mathematical concepts. Learners participate in an interactive environment where ideas, that are often difficult for students to grasp, are easily visualised in a user friendly format. Areas covered include trigonometric ratios and the unit circle. These prototypes have been developed using Macromedia Flash TM software.
