Learner's conceptions of computing
There has been a major shift in science curriculum over the last 20 years or so, attributable to science educators taking constructivist ideas seriously. Has the same ever happened in ICT education? Are we due for a revolution in ICT education? Are there as yet unexplored and deeper ways to take constructivism increasingly seriously in the teaching and learning of computing? What is the ‘cognitive landscape’ within which our ‘digital native’ students work? What would happen to our teaching and learning if we made learners’ conceptions of computing the object of study? This session will explore these pertinent issues.

ICT leadership - do you have what it takes?
While growing numbers of schools have an ICT Leader, the role is defined in a variety of different ways. As position descriptions vary from school to school, there is surprisingly little consensus on who an ICT Leader should be or what the position should entail. No system wide description of the role or expectation of an ICT Leader exists. From the research it was identified that to be an effective Information and Communications Technology Leader, one needs to have experience and skills in four specific areas. These specific areas will be explored during the presentation.
Audience: Curriculum specialists, principals, teachers, ICT leaders and aspiring ICT leaders.

Are you teaching students with literacy problems? Assistive technology can help in the classroom
Programs such as TextHELP Read and Write Gold can give enormous support to those students who struggle with reading and writing. Program functions include converting text to speech and MP3 files, phonetic spell checking and homophone help, word prediction and collection of highlighted main points. Support of this kind can empower reluctant readers and writers to edit their work more effectively. Hand held spellcheckers and voice recognition programs such as Dragon Naturally Speaking can also give struggling students the tools to better cope with learning tasks today and tomorrow.
Audience:Secondary teachers and special education teachers
